Series includes Designing the Color Image, Magic of Light, the Photographer’s Eye and other special technical classes. The Photo Techniques Series can be attended by any photographer having completed at least Camera I and need not be taken in order. Photographers who have completed the Camera sequence will find that these classes build on the foundation they have established. Designing the Color Image I
Color expert and instructor Monte Hartman will guide you in this exciting class designed to expand your ability to “see” color images and convey the fun and excitement of working with color. Topics include color and color vocabulary, color image quality, choices of film, lenses, viewpoint and photographic tools, composition in color and expressing through the medium of color photography. This class will assist you in using your tools to create images with expressive impact. Bring 5-8 color slides or prints or digital images of past work to the first session.

Designing the Color Image II
Featuring instructor, Monte Hartman, Designing the Color Image: Part Two continues the expansion of your ability to “see” color images while enjoying the fun and excitement of working with color slides. We continue our exploration of color itself, color image quality, composition in color as well as the detailed choices of film, lenses, viewpoint and other photographic tools to visually express ideas through the use of color. Photographers of all abilities will strengthening their use of these tools in deliberate creation of images with expressive impact. Learn to build excitement visually, instead of waiting to find it! Since both parts of this class are essentially independent, students can enroll in this class without having taken part one. Class includes 4 sessions AND a Saturday field trip. Master Class: Designing the Color Image

The Master Class continues the general format for Designing the Color Image, but enables students to expand their studies in scope and depth by:
•Increasing the number of meeting to six
•Allowing 2 weeks between meetings.
• Establishing individual objectives for each student.
• Providing assistance in designing and executing projects personally tailored to participants interesting.
• Extending time for personalized critiques.
• Having one Field trip during the class.

Magic of Light: Artificial Light, Flash & the Home Studio

Magic of Light is a class in two parts. This session examines artificial light.
The essence of all fine photographs is light. Learn the skills necessary to execute an image using artificial light. This part will examine how artificial light creates mood, dimension and drama in your photographs. Setting up a simple home studio will be discussed and practiced. Learn the foundations of lighting using simple tools for portraits, still lives and interiors. Come discover how the most powerful images often use very basic lighting. Photographing Children

The challenges in capturing successful portraits of children are unique. The skills required involve using your camera gear seamlessly so that moments, expressions and personalities can be recorded for posterity. Daniel Miller will share his perspectives on the craft of photographing children using the photographs of his own son as an example. Students are invited to bring in children for a portrait session during one of the evenings. Prior experience is helpful but not required. Portrait Photography

Creating the ultimate portrait involves more than just the right pose or moment. Effective portraiture is a result of a photographer’s confidence with materials and locations as well as an interaction between the subject and the photographer. This course will employ extensive use of examples through prints and slides as well as guest presentations. The portrait will be explored in all its forms including candids, environmental portraits and formal portraits. Important issues like prop, model releases and organizing locations will be discussed.

Personal Portfolio

Open to color and black/white photographers in traditional and digital formats.
This unique semester long course is designed to assist photographers in creating a meaningful collection of work on a specific theme of their choice. Photographers in all media are encouraged to enroll as this course will stress enhanced development of skills in photographic craft and vision. Modeled after a college course he has taught since, 1984, Geir Jordahl will encourage each artist to find their personal creative path. Each participant will complete a portfolio of work and be invited to exhibit in the PhotoCentral Gallery. This course may be used for course credit in the Photo Techniques Series toward a certificate in photography. Participants are asked to try to not miss more than two of the scheduled meetings.
